My wife has a chronic illness which has resulted in many dollars paid by insurance/employer to cover medical bills. My manager brought this up when I asked for a raise. Is this legal?

I’ve gone to school for medical insurance coding. Right now I’m in the process of wanting to do coding at home. I just don’t know the right way to go to do this at home. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.
